Chapter Eleven
Christian rubbed his hands as the waitress placed his hamburger in front of him at Mountain View Pizza. He was hungry from hauling debris out to Benâs and Jaredâs trucks all morning. He was still pissed about the store, but together with his friends and family, theyâd made a good dent in cleaning up. The store would be ready for the late spring opening he and Rada had planned.
âSo how did you convince Nicole to stay another week?â Landon asked. âI tried getting Jackson to stick around after Donovanâs wedding, but he wouldnât hear me.â
âConvincing Jackson to stick around is asking the impossible,â Donovan said. âI asked him too and he said there was a new dig site he was expected to go to in Brazil.â
âBrazil, Egypt, New Zealand, Iceland . . . is there a place that kid hasnât gone to yet?â Christian shook his head. âI love the guy, but itâs as if heâs not related to us.â
âI know,â Landon said. âWe all like to stay put.â
âMaybe one day heâll get tired of being Dr. Archeologist,â Donovan said. âThen weâll get him back.â
Ben and Jared joined them at their table.
âHey, guys,â Christian said. âOrder whatever you want. Itâs on me as thanks for being our official garbage men today.â
âOh, you donât have to do that, Christian,â Ben said.
Jared nodded. âYou treat us right as employees and itâs in our best interests that the store be up and running.â
âI know, but you guys are going above and beyond today.â He nudged menus in their direction. âNow order.â
âYou better do as he says,â Landon said. âHe nearly wrestled the two of us over paying.â He motioned to himself and Donovan.
âAnd I would have won that match.â Christian picked up a fry and wagged it at them. âI got the stitches out of my leg the other day and am now back to my usual one-hundred-twenty percent.â
âLooks as if youâll need to be firing on all engines,â Ben said. âYou really think that escaped prisoner is to blame for the store?â
âIt sounds crazy when you say escaped prisoner here in Maplehaven,â Christian said, âbut Iâm not excluding it as a possibility. Nicole is totally convinced.â
âHer sister is also a sensitive subject,â Donovan said. âI didnât know the woman had a rap sheet that extensive. Tessa had mentioned Nicole and her sister didnât communicate, but I never thought jail was involved.â
And jail is the least of it. The verbal abuse Lynda had inflicted upon Nicole was far worse. That shit had caused a beautiful personâinside and outâto doubt her worth. Christian wanted to change that perception for Nicole and heâd been making progress. Hopefully the extra week would be enough time to make her see how much value she truly had.
âSo back to my original question,â Landon said. âHow did you get Nicole to blow another week of vacation on you?â
âI didnât do anything,â Christian said. âShe was the one who came up with that idea. I simply agreed it was a fantastic notion.
